Who is the Suspect?
The arrested individual, Mohammad Sharif Ul Islam Shehzad, alias Vijay Das, is a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national who entered India illegally six months ago via the West Bengal border. DCP Zone 9 Dikshit Gedam stated, “There is evidence to suggest the accused is a Bangladeshi. He has no valid Indian documents, and items recovered from him indicate his Bangladeshi origin.”
The suspect reportedly used multiple aliases to hide his identity. After entering India, he worked briefly for a housekeeping agency in Mumbai before relocating to Thane. He returned to Mumbai 15 days before the attack. Relevant sections of the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act, along with other legal provisions, have been invoked against him. He is currently held at Khar Police Station.
The Night of the Attack
The attack occurred at approximately 2:30 AM in Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra apartment. The intruder entered unnoticed and confronted the actor’s son’s nanny, Philip, near the child’s room. According to Philip, the man threatened her and attacked when she resisted, injuring her hands and wrists.
When Saif Ali Khan intervened to protect his family, the intruder stabbed him multiple times. The actor sustained serious injuries, including a 2.5-inch blade lodged in his thoracic spine. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where emergency surgery was performed to remove the knife shard. Neurosurgeons also treated deep wounds on his neck and hand, which required plastic surgery. His wife, Kareena Kapoor, and a staff member, Geeta, suffered minor injuries during the chaos.
Dr. Niraj Uttamani, Chief Operating Officer of Lilavati Hospital, stated, “Saif is stable and recovering well. He remains under observation but is expected to make a full recovery soon.”
Police Investigation
The Mumbai Police mobilized 20 teams from the Crime Branch and Bandra Police Station to investigate the incident. No signs of forced entry were found, indicating that the intruder exploited a security lapse. CCTV footage played a crucial role in tracking the suspect. The footage showed the man moving through the building and later purchasing earphones at a nearby shop. Statements from the actor’s staff and neighbors further helped the police piece together the suspect’s movements.
A portion of the weapon used in the attack was recovered from Khan’s residence. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has also written to the Mumbai Police Commissioner, urging enhanced security for the actor.
Possible Motives
Authorities are investigating whether the stabbing was a botched burglary or a premeditated assault. Early reports suggest that the intruder may have been familiar with the building’s layout and security weaknesses. The suspect’s intent remains unclear, but police are exploring all angles.
Public Reaction
The attack has sparked widespread concern among Bollywood celebrities and fans. Many have expressed their worries about the safety of public figures and called for stricter security measures. Social media platforms are flooded with messages of support for Saif Ali Khan and his family.
